At the Maine Immigrants’ Rights Coalition (MIRC), our mission is to improve legal, social, and economic conditions for immigrants in the state of Maine. MIRC brings together more than 103 organizations to form a unique statewide network representing diverse ethnic communities. These organizations, a majority of which are led by people of color, work together to foster immigrant inclusion and integration through both support programs and policies.
MIRC is seeking a full-time experienced cook/chef to work with our culturally competent meal program. Under the direction of the MIRC team, this position will oversee the logistics of the food and on-site volunteer program. This position will be based out of a commercial kitchen in South Portland. Meals will be prepared for a shelter housing 179 asylum seekers in accordance with a predetermined meal schedule. In addition, on an as needed basis, this position will assist as a shelter attendant at 166 Riverside Shelter in Portland.

Assist with MIRC’s state legislative advocacy agenda; Conducting research and analyzing MIRC’s priorities state/federal legislation bills and related policy issues; supporting preparing advocacy and public education materials for social media; Providing policy campaigns/research support.
Assisting MiF event organization; Supporting the creation of foundational structures for grassroots organizations while working with the Member Relations Lead & Development Manager and Executive Director.
Setting meeting schedules and agendas, and drafting reports and minute taking. Support with MiF event operations.
Working with staff to promote programs and related projects; community engagement support by attending member-organized events; Key roles in logistics/day of event and helping with planning the MIRC signature event Maine Immigration Forum(MiF) in mid-July in coordination with the Manager of Program and Community Engagement and Executive Director.
Responsibilities:
Social Media Management:
- Assist in creating engaging content for MIRC’s social media platforms, including Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.
- Schedule and upload content to social media channels, ensuring consistency and timeliness.
- Monitor social media engagement and report on key metrics to inform content strategy.
- Collaborate with the Communications and Policy Lead to brainstorm and develop content ideas.
- Assist with marketing for the Maine Immigration Forum
Content Creation:
- Support the Communications and Policy Lead in drafting and editing written content for press releases, website updates, and other communications materials.
- Assist in creating graphics, images, and other visual content for social media and digital platforms.
- Contribute ideas for blog posts, articles, and other written content to showcase MIRC’s initiatives and impact.
Administrative Support:
- Provide administrative support to the Communications and Policy Lead, including organizing files, maintaining databases, and managing communication tools.
- Assist with scheduling meetings and coordinating logistics for events and initiatives.
- Perform other tasks as assigned to support the overall communications strategy of MIRC.
Desired Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Strong interest in communications, social media, and advocacy for immigrant rights.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with attention to detail.
- Familiarity with social media platforms and tools, such as Hootsuite or Buffer, is a plus.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite and Google Workspace.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.
- Eagerness to learn and take on new challenges, with a positive attitude and willingness to contribute.
Supporting the Resettlement Manager and executive Director. Please note that roles, tasks, and or responsibilities may change or be adjusted to meet the needs of our emergency response work.
- Help MIRC and ethnic-based organizations working with systems supporting and housing immigrants experiencing homelessness ensure that they have culturally appropriate food and shelter.
- Support the MIRC ethnic Programs. Help with distributing ethnic meals (if needed/able) and or staffing/supervising volunteers at emergency community shelters.
- Connect with ethnic communities and member organizations (if needed)
- Support with MIRC Advocacy/Programs/ Resettlement projects for immigrants in Maine.
