At the Maine Immigrants’ Rights Coalition (MIRC), our mission is to improve legal, social, and economic conditions for immigrants in the state of Maine. MIRC brings together more than 100 organizations to form a unique statewide network representing diverse ethnic communities. These organizations, a majority of which are led by people of color, work together to foster immigrant inclusion and integration through both support programs and policies.

We appreciate your interest in joining our organization. Ideally, student interns will help us achieve our mission in the fall by participating in any or all of the following areas. Our team is composed of individuals who work across a variety of functional areas to ensure that we achieve our overall mission. As such, we encourage you to identify any specific areas of interest within the organization that you would like to focus on as you submit your resume for consideration.

Assist with advancing MIRC’s local/state/federal legislative advocacy agenda; conduct research and analyze state/federal legislation; track priority bills and summarize key updates for internal and external community partners; support preparation of advocacy materials, policy briefs, fact sheets, and social media content; provide research and campaign support for policy initiatives and public education efforts. Works under the guidance and supervision of the Advocacy/Policy Manager and the Executive Director.

Support cultivation and engagement efforts with multicultural and grassroots partners; assist with organizing MIRC’s signature event, the Maine Immigration Forum (MiF); contribute to strengthening relationships with multicultural and grassroots partners by supporting outreach, resource coordination, and information sharing efforts; provide administrative support for development and member relations activities; work closely with the Multicultural Relations Lead, Fundraising Co-Chairs and the Executive Director.

Assist with scheduling meetings and preparing agendas in coordination with staff leadership; draft meeting summaries, reports, and maintain accurate minutes for internal and external meetings; support basic financial administration, including organizing documentation; maintain internal records, databases, and operational documentation systems; support special events and organizational financial activities; provide cross-departmental operation and administrative support in response to evolving organizational priorities; perform duties under the guidance and supervision of the Finance Manager and the Executive Director.

Support the promotion of organizational programs and related initiatives in collaboration with staff; assist with managing membership-related tasks, including communications, tracking engagement, and supporting member outreach efforts; contribute to coordination and implementation of large-scale coalition initiatives and community-based projects; attend member-organized events and support community engagement efforts on behalf of MIRC; play a key role in MiF event programming and logistics, including planning, day-of coordination, and follow-up; provide programmatic and engagement support in coordination with the Program and Community Engagement Manager and the Executive Director.

Assist with designing basic visuals and graphics to support special events, advocacy campaigns, and other promotional efforts; support the development of materials for MIRC News & Action quarterly newsletter and other organizational communications; supporting material development of MIRC News and Action; help manage MIRC’s general email inbox, responding to inquiries and routing messages to appropriate staff; contribute to projects across social media platforms, website updates, and other digital communication initiatives; play key support roles in communications projects, campaigns, and outreach initiatives as needed; provide general communications support under the guidance and supervision of the Advocacy/Policy Manager, the Communications Manager in coordination with the Executive Director.

Key Responsibilities:

Social Media Management:

  • Assist in creating engaging content for MIRC’s social media platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and Bluesky.
  • Schedule and upload content to social media channels, ensuring consistency and timeliness.
  • Monitor social media engagement and report on key metrics to inform content strategy.
  • Collaborate with the Communications Manager and Advocacy/Policy Manager to brainstorm and develop content ideas.
  • Assist with marketing for the Maine Immigration Forum

Content Creation:

  • Support the Communications Manager and Advocacy/Policy Manager in drafting and editing written content for press releases, website updates, and other communications materials.
  • Assist in creating graphics, images, and other visual content for social media and digital platforms.
  • Contribute ideas for blog posts, articles, and other written content to showcase MIRC’s initiatives and impact.

Administrative Support:

  • Provide administrative support to the Communications Manager and Advocacy/Policy Manager, including organizing files, maintaining databases, and managing communication tools.
  • Assist with scheduling meetings and coordinating logistics for events and initiatives.
  • Perform other tasks as assigned to support the overall communications strategy of MIRC.

Desired Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Strong interest in communications, social media, and advocacy for immigrant rights.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with attention to detail.
  • Familiarity with social media platforms and tools, such as Hootsuite or Buffer, is a plus.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite and Google Workspace.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.
  • Eagerness to learn and take on new challenges, with a positive attitude and willingness to contribute.

Support MIRC’s emergency response efforts serving immigrant and refugee populations; assist ethnic-based and community organizations in addressing urgent needs, including housing, food, and culturally appropriate resources; contribute to programmatic, advocacy, and resettlement initiatives that respond to evolving community needs; engage with immigrant communities and member organizations to strengthen outreach, support, and coordination; provide support for emergency shelters, volunteer coordination, and other crisis-response operations as needed; gain exposure to crisis management, community coordination, and rapid-response operations, developing practical skills in flexible, high-impact work. Works in coordination with various department heads above as supervisors under the guidance of the Executive Director. Collaborates with various department heads who serve as direct supervisors.
